Mako mermaids is about three mermaids named Nixie, Sirena, and Lila. It is also about a half merman named Zach. Nixie, Sirena, and Lila accidentally let Zach go into the moon pool at a full moon. Their whole pod abandons them, but Sirena's sister, Aquata, leaves her sibling her moon ring. The girls use the moon ring to give them legs, although if water touches them they turn back into mermaids. Experiencing a whole other world is hard enough, but taking away Zach's powers seems almost impossible. The three friends met Rita, a principle of Zach's school and also a mermaid. She used her own moon ring to get legs to marry her human which she loved very deeply. Rita decided to help the girls as they learn more about what happened to Zach.When his friend Cam pushes him into a pool, the girls pretend to have discovered he has a tail. Still, Zach does not know there secret. They learn about a trident. Meanwhile, Sirena begins to fall in love with a worker at a restaurant. Evie, Zach's girlfriend, starts to think she is being cheated on and breaks up with Zach. A full moon occurs and Zach acts strange. Three mermaids try to help him through it, but he returns to Mako Island and almost goes to the moon pool. Luckily, he does not reach it in time. He sees the trident sign and becomes determined to learn more about it. No one knows that much about it but it is said to kill anyone who touches it. Zach becomes eager to find this magical artifact, but Lila, Nixie, and Sirena try to keep it away from him. The next full moon happens and Zach makes it to Mako. he dives into a moon pool and discovers the trident at last. lila, Nixie, and Sirena follow him. They reveal their tail in an effort to stop him from reaching the trident. Zach does not get killed, but when Lila grabs it they are launched back out of the pool. Zach is completely betrayed. He no longer trusted the girls. He announces that he will find the trident again and the mermaids worry for his safety.
